“Principal Andrew Hemmings and his team have done an outstanding job turning the school around and making it Hertfordshire’s most improved school and a true example of best practice in education – their exam results speak for themselves.”

Lord Alan Sugar, April 2013

Lord Alan Sugar was the guest of honour at the official opening of the academy’s new buildings on Wednesday 27th March 2013. The grand opening of our new £30million state-of-the art premises, in London Road, was also attended by the Department for Education’s Permanent Secretary, Chris Wormald; Watford MP, Richard Harrington; Hertsmere MP, James Clappison and other Hertsmere councillors.

Lord Sugar joined Mr Hemmings and the academy’s Sponsor and Chair of The Meller Education Trust, Mr David Meller, on stage in the newly built theatre to answer questions from a capacity audience of students, parents, staff and other invited guests. The question and answer session also included wonderful musical performances from students and staff and a short promotional film about the new building, produced and edited by the students themselves. During the question and answer session, students from the academy put questions to Lord Sugar, ranging from what advice he would give to young entrepreneurs today and what his favourite subjects were at school, to how he felt last year’s Olympics had impacted on London’s East End. While Lord Sugar was hesitant to answer which were his least favourite classes at school, so as not to dissuade any of the pupils, he said that he had really enjoyed Science, Engineering and Maths. The Amstrad founder also commented on how children should use their time in school wisely. Lord Sugar added: “Absorb what you can get while you can. It is free and this facility is fantastic”. Following the session, guests had the opportunity to sample the delicious complimentary canapés and sweet treats generously provided by the academy’s caterers, Cucina, and to explore the buildings and participate in various events, culminating in a balloon release, at the end of what was an extremely enjoyable and successful day. When asked about his view of the academy, Lord Sugar commented “Principal Andrew Hemmings and his team have done an outstanding job turning the school around and making it Hertfordshire’s most improved school and a true example of best practice in education – their exam results speak for themselves and I’m delighted to be opening these stunning new premises, featuring an end-to-end ICT solution installed by Viglen.” “We are delighted to welcome Lord Sugar to The Bushey Academy”, added Mr Hemmings. “As education strives to meet the challenges of the 21st Century and the modern economy, visionary business leaders have an important part to play in setting the agenda and inspiring youngsters to make the most of the opportunities presented to them”.
