Key Stage 3
Students receive one period of PBE per week.
In Year 7, students begin by investigating ‘The Island!’. This scheme of work is designed to introduce creatively some tricky concepts underpinning some of the major belief systems, and enable them to express their own beliefs. Students go on to investigate different ways of understanding the world and our existence as well as considering life, traditions and rituals associated with a range of belief systems.
In Year 8, students take an in-depth look at life after death and evil and suffering. Students also think about the beginning of the world and why this philosophical topic has caused confusion – and even anger – since the beginning of civilisation as they investigate ‘Science Vs Religion’. Again life, traditions and rituals associated with a range of belief systems are investigated throughout.
KS4 curriculum: GCSE
Students that have opted to do the GCSE course are taught over three hours a week.
What happens when we die? What does it really mean to be human? Why does evil exist in the world? Are modern doctors ‘playing God’? What can we do to stop racism? These questions, and many more, are all addressed in the GCSE examination our students take in Year 11. Beginning in Year 9, students are required to explore the significance and impact of different religious and non-religious beliefs, teachings, sources and ways of life. They are encouraged to provide well-reasoned responses to a range of topics, thereby developing a critical and reflective approach to the study of religion.
