On Tuesday 23rd January Year 7 participated in a drag race with rocket cars they had been building in science for the previous two weeks. This science, technology, engineering and maths project was aimed at challenging students to design, build and race an aerodynamic polystyrene car which would travel fifteen metres. Students needed to incorporate many scientific principles into the design of their car, particularly focusing on the types of forces which would be acting on the car and how the shape could reduce these forces. The event was run in alliance with four representatives from RAF Northolt, who supervised the priming of the rocket cars before the students detonated them. Competition was fierce with over fifty entries. The winning group was from Ms Moore’s 7 Tripod class with a time of 70.9 milliseconds. This group will represent The Bushey Academy at national finals later this year, where they will compete against other schools. Well done to all Year 7 students and staff for supporting this project and designing some brilliant cars.
